Nothing like the Hunger Games to put things in perspective

Happy Monday (and almost July!) Reader,

โ€‹

So I finally got my hands on Sunrise on the Reaping, the newest Hunger Games book, which tells the story of Haymitch's games and his first attempt at sabotage against the capital (no spoilers here, don't worry).

Needless to say, it's always a kick in the teeth to return to the dystopia of Panem and some of the unnerving, although exaggerated, similarities to our world.

(For example, Reaping Day in the Hunger Games world is on July 4th, which is the kind of detail that makes your skin crawl. And the 4th of July happens to be this Friday. Hahaha what a coincidence. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ)

Reading about these children being used as pawns to keep an entire country in line and most of them (except our hero of course) giving their lives, my own life feels absolutely picturesque in contrast.

I mean, even when things are not going exactly the way I want, I have a healthy gratitude for my life, but there really is nothing like the Hunger Games to put it in even better perspective. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

It also reminds me (with the force of a kickball to the head) that we truly have no time to waste in this life.

We're now halfway through 2025. If you haven't made as much progress as you'd like on your dreams and goals this year, that's okay. I don't know what you're going through. Maybe getting through this year is enough.

But maybe you just haven't been taking small, intentional steps toward your goals.

Maybe you haven't found the time.

Maybe you're looking more at the reasons why you can't, rather than looking for ways you can.

I'm not trying to make you feel guilty, I'm just trying to point out a pattern we've all been stuck in at one point or another, myself included.

So how can you change your perspective?

In my experience, it usually comes down to getting out of your own head and talking to someone else about your next steps.

Forgetting about your life for a second and listening to someone else share their story. Maybe they've already achieved what you want to achieve. Or maybe they're in the same spot as you.

Either way, it gets a lot easier once you feel like you're part of a group, rather than going it alone.

P.S.

I skipped The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, because who cares about Snow. But Haymitch? That's my guy. Always has been -- while everyone else was fighting over Gale vs. Peeta in 2011, I was like please tell me more about that bitter 40-year-old man who has to be constantly drunk to survive his life but secretly cares too much and somehow "won" his Games against double the number of tributes. And almost 15 years later, here we are. Bless Suzanne Collins for giving me closure.

P.P.S.
